New features for LinuxSystems.net users

Google Docs & Spreadsheets For LinuxSystems.net Users

Docs & Spreadsheets is a web-based word processing and spreadsheet program that helps people in your organization collaborate on files and update documents from any internet-connected computer. If your administrator has activated this service, you can get started right away by creating a new document or by uploading a file from your computer. Like your other Google Apps services, Docs & Spreadsheets is integrated with your Gmail contacts list so it's easy to invite people to view or edit your files.

Share a document with others, and you'll all be able to work together on the same document from different computers. Multiple people can make changes at once, and everyone's changes show in real-time. When you're ready, you can publish your document to an internet address that can be accessed by your entire organization. If you need to make a change, you can edit the document and choose to republish once you're ready.

This should be ready in a couple of hours and you can access it here http://docs.linuxsystems.net

Gmail mobile application for BlackBerry devices

BlackBerry users can get quick and easy access to their Google-powered mail while on-the-go. The new downloadable mail application has the same familiar look and feel as Gmail on a standard browser, so that it's just as simple to read and respond to email no matter where you are. Thanks to "prefetching" technology, emails load faster. And the mobile application is synchronized with your mail account, so when you send an email from your BlackBerry, you can find it in your 'Sent Mail' next time you access Gmail from your computer.

Navigate to m.google.com/a from the browser on your BlackBerry to download the free application. The application is free from Google, but carrier charges may apply.

The Start Page

You now have a central place to find important information, preview and access your inbox and calendar, and search the web. Your administrator sets up the initial layout and content for this page, but you're able to customize it as you can with the Google Personalized Homepage.

LinuxSystems.net Calendar

With LinuxSystems.net Calendar, sharing events and meetings with others is simple. You can coordinate schedules with people in several ways:

  • Send out meeting and event invitations, and track people's responses whether or not they use LinuxSystems.net Calendar.
  • Share your calendar (or just some of your agenda information) with people you know.
  • Create a shared calendar for your organization, team or group that everyone can view and edit.
  • Create a public calendar that anyone can subscribe to.
  • Display your calendar on your internal or external website.

LinuxSystems.net Calendar also brings you useful innovations, like the "Quick Add" feature, which lets you add new events to your calendar by just typing a short description of the event in plain language. Rather than hassling with form fields, you can simply enter a single phrase like "meeting with Matt at 1:30pm next Tuesday." Google Calendar will figure out what you mean and add the appointment to your agenda in the right spot. Other helpful additions include SMS access for when you're away from your computer, calendar printing, and an intuitive drag-and-drop interface.

LinuxSystems.net Calendar and LinuxSystems.net Gmail are integrated to make using LinuxSystems.net Calendar even easier. Your calendar draws from the same contact list as your email account, so inviting others to events and meetings is fast and easy. Within Gmail, when you receive a message about an event, you'll see snippets from your agenda to help you decide if you can attend. Then RSVP in just one click.

Google Talk

Google Talk helps people communicate more effectively and efficiently. It provides a simple and free way to speak with and exchange instant messages with your contacts. With Google Apps, your organization's IM network is automatically connected to the whole Google Talk network, so you can instantly connect with millions of other users.

All you need to make free calls around the world is an internet connection, a microphone, and a speaker (which are built-in to most computers these days). Google Talk also offers file transfers so you can quickly send attachments while you're instant messaging, and voicemail so you can leave a message when your contacts aren't online.

Google Talk instant messaging is integrated into the Gmail browser window, so you can see when your contacts are online and connect with them in real-time without leaving your inbox. Your IM conversations can be saved and searched within Gmail, just like email conversations.

Quick facts

The person on the other end can be anywhere in the world, and you can talk for as long as you want for free. If your contacts aren't online when you want to chat, you can leave a voicemail.
  • Real-time file transfers and text messaging -- Send files and text messages to your contacts. There are no file size or bandwidth restrictions.
  • Integrated contact list -- Your Google Talk contact list automatically displays your most-used Gmail contacts, so it's even easier to connect with others.
  • Integrated contact list -- Instant messaging is built right into Gmail, so you can see who's online and instant message with them in real-time, right within the mail browser window. Chat conversations can be saved and searched, just like email conversations.
  • Mobile access -- If you use a BlackBerry, you can download the Google Talk application to your device and use Google Talk when you're away from your computer. Just browse to http://www.blackberry.com/GoogleTalk from your BlackBerry to download the application.
  • Built on open standards -- Built on the open XMPP protocol for instant messaging, Google Talk connects with other XMPP-based instant messaging networks so you can chat beyond the bounds of your own organization.
